It is my pleasure to announce that we have started a national-wide randomized
controlled trial for local intra-arterial fibrinolysis of middle cerebral artery
embolism.
The Japanese Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Labor awarded a 3 year grant for
this project. This is the first randomized controlled trial in Japan for
fibrinolytic intervention therapy. This intervention therapy has widely been
conducted by local physicians in various non-standardized manners lacking of a
high level of clinical evidence. We accordingly struggled to standardize
inclusion/exclusion criteria and fibrinolysis procedures so that multiple stroke
centers could participate. In this clinical trial, we are highly encouraged to
establish the efficacy and effectiveness of local intra-arterial fibrinolysis as
a therapeutic strategy in the acute phase of cerebral embolism.
We
have recruited hospitals and stroke centers participating in this trial, and get
ready to start the trial early January, 2002. The trial will be ended in
December, 2003. The outline of our clinical trial will be documented on
this web site.
We believe this multicenter national-wide trial will provide a better
understanding of fibrinolytic intervention therapy and open a door for
challenging brain attack more effectively.
